Medical Power
Tools
Medical
power tools are every bit as necessary as normal medical tools
in today's world, and even make the job faster and simpler.
They range from the smallest of tools to the largest, any
medical tool that needs a power supply, whether plug-in or
battery, can be called a medical power
tool.
Medical power tools range in
size from very tiny pen-like tools to large fridge-sized
machines. An ultrasound machine, heart monitor, mammogram
machine, xray machine can all be classed as medical power
tools, but so can the tiny tools used in microsurgery.
Specialized light and magnifying units for seeing into eyes,
ears and throats are power tools, as are some modern electric
stethoscopes.
Surgery makes use of many
medical power tools, from tools needed to make small incisions
and bone cuts, to small drills, to small imaging machines like
scopes and probes that are used both inside and outside the
body.
Large medical power tools have
a lot of room for changes, but the tiny power tools need all
the brains the researchers can muster. They must invent motors
that can fit inside a very small housing, yet maintain their
power, torque and functionality. And they must pay special
attention to all effects of that smallness, since they must
keep vibration to a minimum, make sure the motor doesn't
overheat or heat up the physician's hand too much, and resist
high humidity and contact with many fluids and substances.
Companies are now specializing in motors smaller than 10mm in
diameter... that's a whole powerful motor inside about half of
your finger's tip!
